Canine Cardiac Arrhythmia – Understanding Heart Problems in Dogs

Arrhythmia is the term used to describe heartbeats that are either too fast or slow. Abnormal heart rhythms occur when there is an irregularity in the transmission or generation of electrical impulses in the heart. Not all arrhythmias are life-threatening but it is important to monitor them and determine their underlying cause.Vet examining a Pug with a stethoscope

Diagnosing Arrhythmia in Dogs

After assessing your pet’s medical history, we will listen to their heart and check their pulse, ensuring that each heartbeat is producing sufficient blood flow throughout the body. We’ll also look for signs of laboured breathing, weakness, and loss of appetite. As well as completing a physical check-up, we will perform an ECG (electrocardiogram) to record the electrical activity of the heart.

The sinoatrial node is responsible for firing electrical surges in the heart. If the electrical signal travels through the heart in an abnormal manner, irregular heartbeats can occur. Arrhythmias may also occur when the beats come from an abnormal place in the heart. No matter what the problem is, the ECG records the heart’s electrical activity and diagnoses the issue.

Diagnosing Arrhythmia at Eastside Vets

Our 24-hour emergency hospital has the latest equipment to detect irregular heartbeats. We have several types of heart monitors as well as a range of ECG monitors. This includes the latest wireless ECG recorders. These machines are perfect for pets because they don’t have to be connected to the main power source. This reduces their size, helping to calm pets that would ordinarily become restless or agitated.

With these devices, we receive real-time readings no matter where your pet is. Whether they’re on a walk or visiting a family member, our vet station will continuously receive data, making it easier to identify irregularities. You can use our wireless devices to record and monitor your pet’s heart activity for up to seven days.
